Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The on and off sharp pain you feel in your lower left abdomen is suggesting of possible ovulation pain. As you had your mother suffering of ovary cysts, I advise to consult with OG specialist when you first start to feel the pain. So, an abdominal ultrasound would be carried out to evaluate the changes in your ovaries and your abdomen. For the moment, I can suggest to take mephenamic acid to reduce the pain and drink plenty of water.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
