What Does Significant Calcification Of Internal Carotid Arteries Mean?

what does significant calcification of the internal carotid arteries mean ? Got CT scan for sinus headaches and this came back in review of scan but I can't get to see Dr for 5 months. It also said frontal sinuses are atrophic nd the pituitary fossa is grossly normal.

Thanks for the query,

Calcification of the intracranial portion of internal carotid arteries might be indicators of arterial stenosis. Stenosis in the internal carotid artery carries an increased risk of stroke.Smoking and hypercholesterolemia are independently associated with the presence of intracranial calcifications.
Calcium scoring needs to be done to assess the burden of calcification and the associated risk of stroke.

Regarding frontal sinus atrophy it is not really significant.Recurrent/chronic sinusitis can lead to sinus atrophy later in life. But just frontal sinus atrophy is unlikely. A persistent metopic suture in the skull which is a small development aberration of the skull bone could be another cause. In any case I don't think it will per se cause any problems.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards
Dr M Ramesh Kamath
