What Does Sore Throat Along With Severe Headache Indicate?

I have a sudden onset of symptoms that I am a little curious about One day I woke up with a severe soar throat. that night I was woken up around 4am by a severe headache, it felt like a lot of pressure in my head and no matter which way I turned my head the pressure and pain would just follow and radiate all around my head. My first thought was that maybe high blood pressure was causing the pain because when I tried sleeping sitting up it seemed to reduce the pain just a little bit. About 2 hours later I took 2 Tylenol tablets and it relieved the pain and I was able to go back to sleep. I remember having this type of experience about 4-5 weeks ago but wasn’t able to resolve the pain so I ended up staying awake all night. New things that I don’t remembr happening last time is that I sneezed very hard several times throughout today and Now I have a runny nose and it is very liquidy and clear (maybe the slightest yellow tint). So far it is a pretty slow steady flow then all of a sudden will run faster. I’m not sure if this is something I should be concerned about the headaches are my chief complaint. Any insight will be so helpful thank you!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The symptoms that you have mentioned most likely fit into a condition know as "sinusitis" or inflammation of the mucosa of paranasal sinuses in our facial bones used for reconditioning of inhaled air. The cause of this condition is most commonly allergy and common cold superimposed by a bacterial infection. This inflammation causes swelling of the mucosa lining the paranasal sinuses thus hindering the normal drainage of the mucus produced there. So it causes pressure symptoms like facial pain exacerbated with straining and bending down and severe headache. If I were your treating doctor I would prescribe you the following medicines along with some precautionary measures to ensure rapid recovery from the aforementioned condition;

1. Tab. Amoxicillin/clavulanate 1 gram twice daily 12 hours apart for 7 days
2 Tab. Ibuprofen/pseudoephedrine 200/30 milligrams thrice daily for 5 days
3. Tab. cetirizine 10 milligrams once at night time before retiring in bed
4. Xylometazoline Nasal spray 2 puffs twice daily.

Advice:

* Take all the medicine with meals to avoid upset stomach
*Do not miss the dose
* Steam inhalation and saline gargles will give more soothing
* Drink plenty of water for well hydration.

Hopefully, prompt treatment with these medications will cure your disease and will subside your symptoms completely. If there is any other concern please visit ENT specialist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
