What Does Squamous Atypia Indicate After Tag Removed Under Tongue?
Good Morning and thank you for your help.
My father had squamous cell carcinoma of the nose, died 36 months after diagnosis. I just had a small 'tag' removed from under my tongue with a dx of mild squamous atypia. Should I be concerned or just vigilant?
Hello and welcome to HCM, A 'tag' with histopathological findings of squamous atypia is alarming. Squamous atypia will not occur in tongue without any precipitating cause. Is there history of smoking or tobacco or gutka chewing? If yes that has to be stopped immediately. Squamous atypia is harbinger of squamous cell carcinoma. Is there any white patch or red patch or irregular hard firm to hard area in oral cavity? If yes then it has also be examined histopathologically. Smoking or tobacco chewing not only cause squamous cell carcinoma of oral cavity but also cause cancer of pharynx, larynx, nasal cavity, lungs, pancreas, urinary bladder, etc.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja P Wahal
