General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
If it is a fistula they will sometimes heal up on their own but usually a surgery is needed. A fistula is an abnormal opening between a structure (like the rectum) and the outside. If you had a fistula you would likely be having some stool leaking from it and not just swelling. Swelling around the rectum is usually a hemorrhoid. We can give you no real recommendations without knowing the exact cause. You may want to see a second opinion since having a fistula is fairly serious.
