What Does Swollen, Cold, Discolored Area Post Ankle Injury Suggest?

My daughter had an ankle injury on Friday and we went to the hospital. They took an X-ray and the doc said she is unable to see if there is any fracture. So she told to wait and see if we could see any improvement. My daughter is using crutches now and also wore an ankle brace. Though the injured area is getting better her foot is swollen now and very cold. Also i could see some Color changes. What should be done now.

Hi,

The symptoms of swelling, coldness, and discoloration after an ankle injury may suggest a possible complication known as compartment syndrome. Compartment syndrome occurs when there is excessive pressure build-up within a muscle compartment, leading to reduced blood flow and oxygenation to the affected area. This can cause tissue damage, and if left untreated, can even result in permanent disability.

It is important to seek immediate medical attention if you notice any of the above symptoms, especially after an ankle injury. You may need further diagnostic tests, such as an MRI, to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment options may include rest, ice, elevation, compression, and pain medication, and in severe cases, surgery may be necessary.

It is important to follow up with your daughter's doctor or a specialist, such as an orthopedic surgeon, for ongoing monitoring and treatment of her ankle injury. They may also recommend physical therapy to help her recover and prevent future injuries.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
