What Does The MRI Report Regarding Disc Reduction Indicates?
Hi Took an MRi after pain on the lower left back. The results of the MRI are ( as in the comments section) Posterior Disc extrusion L5 -S1, indentation and pressure-anterior disc of thecal sac with suggestion orf pressure over exxiting nerve on left side. Relative facet joint with changes of disc dessication and dehydration is seen.Minimal disc reduction in disc height L5-S1 Please advise
There are small spongy discs between the small bones in the spine. These discs should be aligned in a normal fashion to allow various movements in the spine and also provide cushioning. In your back the discs at level L 5 - S 1 is bulged backwards and there is loss of water in the disc. This is causing decrease in disc height leading to pressure effects on the nerve roots which leave the spinal canal at that level on both sides.
It is a mild problem but you may need rest if the pain is significant. You may try doing physiotherapy and avoid lifting heavy weights. This problem will not heal completely but if you take precautions, the progress of the problem will be slow and you will still be able to continue with your daily activities without much troubles. You can enjoy a normal life but be aware of your back and do not take part in intense physical activities.
