Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am due to have an echocardiogram , what will happen ? This is part of a pre-operative assessment specified by my consultant, what does the echocardiogram consist of ?
It's basically an ultrasound scan of the heart- the same sort of scan that women have when pregnant on their abdomen.
You will be asked to lay on a couch on your side. A Nurse or Doctor will apply a lubricating jelly over your heart area and move a probe across it. The Echo assesses the function and structure of the heart. The test takes about half an hour. You only have to undress from the waist up and you are given a gown.
