What Does The Following Thyroid Scan Report Suggest?
Should I be concerned with these new thyroid results? I went to see the doctor due to neck pain. My last test showed a nodule on the left side but it had disappeared, now a cyst has formed there, and a test last month showed a solitary nodule on the right about 1 cm but now it shows hypoechoic? Heres the results: There is a cyst identified related to the lower pole portion of the left thyroid lobe measuring 7 x 4 x 6 mm. This is new when compared to the previous exam. It has a benign appearance. On the right side there is a small hypoechoic area measuring 3 x 2 x 4 mm. This was not seen previously as well. Continued follow up suggested. No dominant mass identified.

Cysts are almost always benign and rarely need to be biopsied. The nodule on the right side is hypoechoic but does not mention any other concerning features, so is probably of intermediate risk, but the nodule is very small. If it were to grow to be greater than 1 cm, then a biopsy using a small needle (called fine needle aspiration) may be appropriate. The nodule should be monitored every 12-24 months for any changes.
In summary and in my opinion, there is no reason to be concerned, but just to be safe it is a good idea to monitor the nodule that they mention.
