Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Does The Thyroglobulin Level Of 9.6 Indicate?
Hi, My name is Marc. A nodule was discovered on my thyroid early Oct/2116. Approximately 1cm diameter; mostly cystic with a small solid mass inside. Since then ONLY a few ultrasounds; a biopsy, in which not enough cells were extracted, to diagnose;, and enhanced blood work beyond T4free and TSH levels were performed. I have never taken medication, nor any surgery performed relating to my condition. Only tests. I have failed one of these tests-Thyroglobulin,tumor marker. My result is 9.6. What does this result mean? How serious? Am basically healthy otherwise. A few more pounds than should. Boohoo. Next appt. with doctor is in 3 weeks. Thank you
As you mention, thyroglobulin is a tumor marker for the thyroid gland. Thyroglobulin testing is primarily used to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment for differentiated thyroid cancer and to monitor for recurrence. In your case it is used to clarify the situation of your thyroid nodule because in some cases these nodules can hide a tumor.(If the TG result is high, then a possible tumor in the thyroid is suspected)
The reference range of thyroglobulin in euthyroid persons is 3-40 ng/mL. Your actual result is within the range and this means that you have no reason to worry about your thyroid nodule, for the moment. It is not serious or dangerous for you. Considering all your test result,it is recommended to repeat the ultrasound of the thyroid after 6 months to monitor the size and all the other characteristics of your thyroid nodule.
My advice is to discuss with your local doctor about all your thyroid test results and when it is will be necessary to repeat the FNAB of the nodule.
Hope I have answered your query.
