What Does This CT Scan Result For Nasal Blockage Indicate?

Hello Doctor,My younger brother (25 yrs old) is facing nasal blockage for 3-4 years.Problem has increased since last couple of months. We have consulted ENT specialist and on his advice done X-ray and CT-scan.CT-scan reports reveal Bilateral ethmoid, maxilarry and right sphenoid sinusitis with bilateral blocked osteometal complexes .Now our consultant is advising to go for (surgery) FESS.We are afraid of any kind of surgery as all surgery has some risk and complications and want to treat it through medication. Please advice what should we do ? Is surgery is the only option ?Can we avoid surgery and if not then what are the risk associated with it and what are the chances of reoccurrence of this problem. Regards, Ashish

Hi,

Every individual have four pair paranasal sinuses in the head which secretes mucus which helps in normal function of respiration. Sinusitis is the condition of inflammation of these air cavities. Common causes for inflammation are allergy, infections due to bacteria, virus, fungi, etc.

Four sinuses are frontal, ethmoidal, maxillary and sphenoid. Frontal sinuses located beneath the eyebrows, maxillary sinuses are found under the cheek bones, ethmoid sinuses are seen near the root of nose inside the nasal cavity and sphenoid sinuses right beneath the brain. Complications of chronic sinusitis are headache, sleep disturbance and associated symptoms, vision problem and in serious cases, meningitis, inflammation of the membranous covering of the brain.

Chronic sinusitis is the condition in which the symptoms of sinusitis such as headache, nasal blocking, nasal discharge, post nasal drainage, breathing difficulty, etc. appear for the period of more than 12 weeks. Surgery is the choice, if the medical management fails. FESS, Functional Endoscopic sinus surgery is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which the sinus drainage are opened and enlarged for better drainage under direct visualization. It may be added with septoplasty, correction of nasal septum, if there is deviated nasal septum. My suggestion is opt for surgery, since it is chronic in nature.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
