What Does This CT Scan Test Result For Ear Pain Indicate?

Hello. I am a 34 y/o male with a history of chronic Ear Infections. I have had 7 sets of tubes, bilateral stapedectomy with revision on right, TM reconstruction done on the right, bilateral hearing loss, and BAHA on right side. About a week ago, I started experiencing pain behind ears bilaterally and so I went to the ER at the VA and they did a CT scan. RESULTS: Bilateral partial mastoid air cell pacification’s, nonspecific, increased since 12/12/2015. Probable cerumen within the distal right external auditory canal. Minimal paranasal sinus mucosal thickening. The bones and soft tissue of the scalp are otherwise unremarkable. The VA ENT office cannot see me until Monday at the earliest and I was just wondering if there is any cause for concern in regards to the CT Scan and pain / nausea / dizziness. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you very much.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Bilateral partial mastoid air cells pacifications increase may be indicative of infection & fluid accumulation in the middle ear (otitis media, mastoiditis or pneumococcus). Cerumen or earwax deposition is seen in the distal right external auditory canal. Yes, you should be concerned as cerumen deposition needs to be treated and cleared up by an ENT.

The paranasal sinus thickening (mainly caused by the inhalation of allergens) needs to be treated (by nasal irrigation or corticosteroids sprays or injections). Get clinically examined & treated at the eariest. Pain in the ear can be due to cerumen & partial mastoid cells pacifications bilaterally. You can take NSAIDS, one sos when needed for temporary relieve.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
