What Does This Bilirubin Level For Yellowness Of Eyes And Skin Indicate?
My 16 year old nephew had a routine well child check up and the blood draw reviled a bilirubin level of 4.8, his eyes and skin are starting to become yellowish as of just within the past week. The Dr. Office doesn't seem concerned. This doesn't seem normal to me or safe is it should he go to hospital asap?
I have gone through your query and can understand your concern... Bilirubin level can be measured in two units. Bilirubin level of 4.8 μmol/l is normal & Bilirubin level of 4.8 mg/dl is very high & is indicative of some liver or liver related diseases Elevated bilirubin levels can cause yellowish discoloration of skin, eyes & mucous membrane This is called Jaundice. Elevated Bilirubin levels are caused by folowing problems 1. Hemolysis or increased breakdown of red blood cells 2. Hepatitis or infection of liver 3. Obstruction of bile duct 4 Gilbert's syndrome – a genetic disorder of bilirubin metabolism
Refer to your physician Hope this information helps
