Hello, I recently had a thyroid biopsy with the final diagnosis as Follicular Lesion with comments that states biopsy demonstrate a follicular lesion/neoplasm. Given nature of biopsy specimen one cannot rule out capsular invasion. What does this mean? Cancerous ?
Your thyroid biopsy indicates the possibility of a cancer like lesion in the thyroid gland. Please do not worry and proceed with immediate treatment for your condition as there is involvement of capsule. The type of cancer cells in your case is follicular and this is seen in 15% cases of thyroid cancer and tends to affect older adults. Studies have shown that follicular carcinomas tend to be slow growing and relatively straightforward to treat. YOu might require surgery after discussion with your surgeon. More than 8 out of 10 people with follicular thyroid cancer will live for at least 10 years after being diagnosed.
