Diffuse thinning of bilateral optic nerves with prominence of dural sleeves right optic nerve measures 1.5m and left measures 2 mm. There is thinning of optic chiasma Both eyeballs appear normal Bilateral lacrimal glands appear normal Extra ocular muscles appear normal Bilateral cavernous sinuses appear normal

Thanks for writing in.

There are many unrelated causes of optic atrophy. The most common cause is poor blood flow, called ischemic optic neuropathy, which most often affects elderly people. The optic nerve can also be damaged by shock, various toxic substances, radiation, and trauma.

Other causes like glaucoma, brain tumors, arteritis and strokes need to be ruled out.
