What Does This Report Indicate?

DISC DESSICATION NOTED AT L5-S1 LEVEL.
LV5-SV1 LEVEL - DIFFUSE DISC BULGE, POSTEROCETRAL DISC EXTRUSION CAUSING ANTERIOR THECAL SAC INDENTATION, NARROWING OF LEFT NEURAL FORAMINA, LEFT LATERAL RECESS STENOSIS AND COMPRESSION OF LFET EXTING NERVE ROOTS. THE AVAILABLE SPINAL CANAL IS 1.38 CM ^2. BILATERAL LIGAMENTUM FLAVUM HYPERTROPHY AND FACET ARTHROPATHY SEEN

Thanks for writing in.

There are small bones in the lower back called lumbar vertebrae. These are a group of 5 bones aligned one on top of each other. In between these bones there is a sponge like structure called as disc which helps in movements of the lower back.

In the above MRI scan, there is loss of water component in the disc at location L 5 - S 1 and is due to degeneration. The disc is also showing a bulge in its central position backwards and causing pressure on the covering of spinal cord. This is mentioned as indentation. This is a type of inter vertebral disc herniation.

The disc herniation is also causing pressure on nerve roots passing through the space between bones L 5 and S 1. This is more on the left side. You might be experiencing pain and discomfort on the left lower back and leg because of this.

Treatment is physiotherapy at first and then nerve pain reliever medications. It may take months for pain relief. If these do not work then a small surgery can be done to remove part of herniated disc and release pressure on nerves.
