Hi my husband had a sonogram done of the abdomen we just got the results and it says that there is no evidence of solid mass, calculus or hydronephrosis. Bilateral renal cysts are noted . A 5.7 cm right upper pole cyst demonstrated multiple septations. 5.1 cm left upper pole renal cyst demonstrates a single thin septation he has been having pain and high fever off and on for about 7mo. his Dr now recommended a CT can these cysts become cancerous ? can they be treated?

Hello and welcome to HCM,
Bilateral renal cysts with thin septa are suggestive of benign cysts.
However, a close follow up is require since there is a small risk of the cyst turning cancerous.
At the same time, kidney function tests should be carried out to check the status of kidney functions.
Kidney functions are not affected in benign cysts.
A history of on and off fever for seven months needs to be investigated.
Fever for long duration can occur in case of tuberculosis commonly, however, there are many other causes of fever of long duration.
I suggest you to consult your primary healthcare provider to look for the cause of fever and thus plan management.

Thanks and take care

Radiologist Dr. Elijah Kwasa's  Response
Hello,

The 5.7 cm right upper pole cyst has a small chance of being cancerous. However, it is more likely due to infection.

Either way, he needs to get the CT of the kidneys to be able to advise on the type of treatment (if any) needed.

All the best.
