What Does This Ultrasound Test Result For Testicular Pain In A 11 Year Old Indicate?
My 11 year old son was seen and treated for testicular pain last month. He has undergone a course of antibiotics which cleared up his pain. On the first ultrasound it was noted that he had some varicose veins in his testicle. On the follow up ultrasound the radiologist noted that he has calcification of the epididymus. Is this considered epididymitis? Will the calcification self resolve? Is this possibly the cause of his pain, or is this a result of an UTI? UTI was never discussed as a possible cause at the pediatrician. He is uncircumcised. Is this a possible factor?
Calcification is not a sign of active epididymitis. It can be caused by healed epididymal infection. Calcification once it has set in is unlikely to resolve. But seeing as it is not a sign of active infection, resolution of calcification should not be a primary concern.
Another cause of calcification around the testis is the varicose veins mentioned. These may be the cause and sometimes surgery may be needed to resolve the problem. Finally, children who are not circumcised are at a mildly increased risk of urinary tract infections. But epididymal problems are not usually due to UTIs.
All the best.
