Hello Brian
Welcome to HealthcareMagic.Factor V leiden, is a specific gene mutation which leads to a kind of bleeding disorder-where there is an increased risk of pathological clots obstructing the blood vessels(thrombophilia). These clots can be formed anywhere blocking the vessels in any organ including brain, liver , kidney. This abnormality needs special attention in women who are pregnant. In such cases there are increased risk of miscarriage/ loss of pregnancy. This risk is two-three times during the second or third trimester. Also it is seen to increase the risk of pregnancy induced hypertension, placental abruption(early separation of placenta), a delayed fetal growth.Howsoever, it must be comforting enough to know that these kind of women do have normal pregnancies also. So if you are in doubt, please do not panic, and with the help of your physician, consult a hematologist, who would guide you with a battery of tests.Wish you a good health .Take care.
