What Is A Sickle Cell Trait?

My daughter is 3 months 1 week pregnant and we are both white, her fathers mom is full blooded Indian. Her Doctor called her today at her home and told her that she has got Sickle Cell Trait . Does sickle cell only exist in black people, or can white people get it without having to be black or sexual intimate with black, or could it have come from Indian? Me and her are fully white.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

People who inherit one sickle cell gene and one normal gene have sickle cell trait. People with sickle cell trait usually do not have any of the symptoms of sickle cell disease, but they can pass the trait on to their children.

Statistics show that in the U.S., approximately 1 out of 10-12 African Americans has sickle cell trait, and 1 out of 400-500 African American newborns has the disease. Approximately 1 out of 1,000-1,400 Hispanic newborns has the disease.
