What Is Causing Sharp Pain Behind Right Knee While Walking, Getting Relief With Heating Pad?

I have an issue with my right rear knee. I am somewhat sure it's not the right knee but behind it. When I step down on my heal as I walk I feel a sharp pain sometimes on the rear of the knee that seems like a ligament or muscle tear. It's not swollen at all. It feels better when heated with a pad I'm 52 year old male in law enforcement initially thought it was due to a swollen bursar sac but not sure. Most of the day it does not bother me until I walk just wrong and move on the heal any suggestions

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

From your description of symptoms, I feel that the pain might be originating from the soft tissues in the back of the knee (muscles, ligaments or capsule of the joint).

An MRI scan of the knee joint is mandatory to rule out the soft tissue pathology in the knee joint that is bothering you. So, I suggest you to undergo the scan.

Definitive management depends on the condition diagnosed.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
