General & Family Physician, Dr. Samarth 's Response
Hi, I am Dr Samarth, cerebral atrophy is a condition in which the brain tissue starts to degenerate. This is a serious condition because the brain tissue starts contracting and the brain function decreases. In a newborn, it could be due to Birth asphyxia, Hydrocephalus or congenital infection. Prognosis is poor in such cases and if the condition is progressive, the child will deteriorate further. Child might have seizures, lethargy or neurological deficit. Child might develop mental retardation later on.
Thanks for the consultation. Any idea of any complicated delivery for your friend? From the history it appears that baby have difficulty from the birth. Your friend baby needs full check up with the following physicians. 1.Pediatrician for general growth pattern. 2.Pedaitric neurologist for neurological assessment.
