What Is Light Red Mucus Filled Cough While On Oxygen For COPD Suggestive Of?
My spouse has COPD and has for several years. He is on oxygen as well. This morning he was coughing out a ton of mucus (as usual) but it was pink to light red in color. My question is is this a sign of something acute that is happening? His other COPD symptoms are very severe every day. Is this something I need to rush him to the ER with?

Red mucus suggest bleeding from respiratory tract..
In bronchitis or secondary infection in COPD can lead bleeding....
If red mucus continues than doctor should be consulted for examination (Auscultation) and x ray....
If needed spirometry done for assess severity and deciding further management
If needed sputum examination can be done
Ultimate treatment is lung transplantation in COPD but if severe enough than not beneficial
Take care
With keeping all this in mind consult pulmonologoist for examination and further work up
