What Is The Cause For A Swollen Lump In My Mouth?

I have a swollen lump in my mouth - i thought it was an absess so I went to my dentist she prescribed me 2 x types of antibiotics, ibuprofen and a mouthwash - the pain over the weekend was excrutiating, I have been back to the denitist today and had xrays as I still have the pain and the lump the dentist said it does not relate to my teeth and there is nothing more she can do for me. What other thing can be causing this?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...

As per your complain and presentation of symptoms as you have not specified the exact location of the lump but as far as your description denotes it seems that the lump is over the gums and it can be either due to any hard food or toothbrush bristle that must have injured the gums and it must have led to stuffing of the bacteria in the gum pockets leading to infection and formation of gum boil..
In this case cleaning of the gums in the localized area followed by intake of antibiotics for a short duration can help..

In case if there is infection in gums due to poor oral hygiene there can be formation of gingival or gum abscess or a periodontal abscess if infection becomes deeper and involves the underlying bone also..
In this case deep scaling, curettage and oral intake of antibiotics, painkillers, topical application of antimicrobial ointments and antimicrobial mouthwash gargles can relieve..
Taking a Vitamin C lozenge daily can also have an additive effect..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
