I had orif ankle surgery 2 years ago for a bimalleor fracture. I am a very active 48 year old woman and am planning to thru hike the Pacific Crest Trail. Prior to beginning training for the hike, I walked at least 20 miles per week and hiked often on the weekends. In preparing for my hike, I have committed to hiking at least 5 miles a day during the week with longer 15-20 mile hikes on the weekend, increasing my pack weight as my training progresses. I have had no swelling of my ankle in over a year until last week. I began doing PT exercises that the orthopedic surgeon recommended after my surgery in an effort to alleviate the swelling and stiffness in my ankle. This helps to a point, but I am very concerned about my upcoming hike. Thoughts on causes of increased swelling and possible solutions?
