Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
For the past year I have been having one or two maybe three random hiccups within one hour then the next hour it will do the same. sometimes their very big hiccups and hurt my chest and its been kind of getting annoying now and it doesn t seem like its going to stop. I am a 16 year old female and was just wondering if there is something wrong with me that is causing this or just a simple way i can stop this? I ve tried normal hiccup things to stop them but they don t seem to work.
Hello
Welcome to HealthcareMagic. Hiccups, occasional are usually self limiting. But if you feel, they have been there for quite some time, then they probably need to be evaluated. The causes are varied like central nervous system causes congenital malformations, malignancies, multiple sclerosis, infection, trauma, some vascular lesions. Some may be psychogenic in origin like hysteria, fear, some personality disorders. It could be irritation of diaphragm(main muscle of breathing) like Hiatal hernia, a subphrenic abscess. Some metabolic causes like less pottasium/sodium/calcium..So consult a primary care physician and get it diagnosed.Take care.
