What Is The Cause For Wierd Taste In My Mouth When On Enteric Coated ASA?

I have been taking 81 mg of enteric coated ASA since I had a stroke end of February. Also take Ferrous Sulphate 300mg and Vit C. Noticed I have a funny taste in my mouth all of the time- only last few months- any ideas- really driving me crazy. I am only 41 yrs old. Stacey

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi Stacey,

Thanks for your query.

The awkward taste is due to two reasons:-
* Ferrous sulphate which produces a disagreeable and a metallic taste in the mouth.

* Both- Ferrous sulphate and ASA- are gastric irritants and prolonged use increases acid production. The excess acid tends to regurgitate into the throat (called Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease-GERD), which too causes abnormal taste.

* A course of anti-acid drug, such as, Pantoprazole or Omeprazole, along with a Probiotic + Prokinetic drug will give relief.

Consult your doctor and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he will agree with me and will prescribe the advised drugs in appropriate doses.

If you find my response helpful and informative, do not forget an “excellent” (5-star rating) to my answer, to ENCOURAGE ALL doctors- engaged in social service- to render sound advice to the FREE queries.

Take care
