Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been feeling faint when I lay down and get up. Today I found some dark red blood in my stool. Should I go to the ER or wait to make an appointment on Monday with my GI? Last time they just gave me meds and told me to make an appointment with the GI.
I think the faint feeling might be caused by an anemia, that is caused by hemorrhage. Your case is emergency because sometimes patients that have blood in stool can have anemia, and they need blood. So I recommend you to go to Emergency Room.
Blood in stool is caused by a lot if different causes such as: 1- Hemorrhoids. 2- Colon diseases. 3- Liver diseases.
But you need an exact diagnosis to be treated. I recommend: 1- Abdominal ultrasound. 2- Rectoscopy. 3- Complete blood count. 4- Liver function test. 5- Urine test. 6- Total protein test.
Consult your gastroenterologist.
I hope you find this helpful.
I wish you a fast recovery. Dr. Behar.
