What Is The Cause Of Low Blood Sugar Level After Taking Glimepiride?
Hello....well.....i was put on metformin800 mg X2 a day, over a week ago and my BS reading have been all over the place. My A1C was 6.7 after an 8 hr fast. And BG was 133. so i guess dr thought i needed to be on the meds. Before all that my BS was reading in consistent numbers, usually below 130. But now they drop like a rocket. Earlier i was 145,napped for a few hrs and it was 95. Something isnt right there. I called the Hosp hotline and they said dont take the second pill.Help. Scares the **** out of me. Oh and he also prescribed glimepiride 2 mg first thing in the morning.
Glimepiride 2 mg is a third generation secretogogue, sulfonyl urea group of drugs which acts by increasing insulin production by beta cells.
Its action profile lasts for 12 hours to 16 hours, it is well known to cause hypoglycemia as its action is of longer duration.
If the prescribed dosages of tablet is causing blood sugars to go low then you need to reduce the dosage of the tablet by half of the current doses. that is if you are taking 2 mg of glimeperide then it should be reduced to 1 mg
Thanks
