What Is The Correct Dosage Of Metformin For High Sugar Level?

Hello doctor.
I am in Middle East now. I was detected with hyperthyroidism in june 2013 in India. I was prescribed 50mcg as the test results were 5.5. Now, in February, 2014, I went for a recheck up and the result of TSH is 4.6. The doctor here doubled the dose and asked me to take 100 mcg for 45 days. I am also PCOD so I take metformin 500 3 times a day. Last time I checked my sugar level, it was 105 pp. The current doctor asked me to take metformin only once. But gynaecologist had prescribed 3 times. I m confused. What should I do? Doctors on india said I m not diabetic but I should take care. But this doc is saying I might be diabetic. Should I reduce my dose of metformin? And, can I take 100 mcg thyroxine?

Hi.
Patients with PCOS have a risk of developing diabetes in the future. The recommended dose of metformin is around 1500 mg per day. So 500 mg three times a day is a good choice. Again this dose can vary from patient to patient. Metformin helps to reduce risk of diabetes and helps in weight reduction. It also helps in ovulation.
Looking at your TSH levels I wouldn't increase the dose of thyroxine now unless you are planning for pregnancy soon. The cut off of TSH i'm pregnancy is lower at 2.5.
