What Is The Difference Between Euflexxa And Hyalgan Injections?

I have been under the care of a non invasive sports orthopedic specialist in the DFW, Texas area. My doctor prescribed euflexxa injections and the treatment has been very successful. I got word from my doctor s office that he is moving out of state which leaves me looking for a specialist that embraces the same treatment for osteoarthritis knees. Right now I m not experiencing any knee pain. I had my last visit in March 2015 and he said I may not need another series of injections for another 6 months or maybe longer. I m very active and I don t want to risk the pain returning without a physician to see. I m not a runner but I am a walker who Jazzercises multiple times a week and participates in 2 Half Marathons per year with a sprinkling of 5 and 10Ks in between. What is the primary difference between euflexxa and hyalgan treatments? Can you take me on as a patient?

Hi,

Euflexxa injection contains sodium hyaluronate that is used in the treatment of knee pain in patients with joint inflammation or osteoarthritis. A substance that occurs naturally in the joints which acts as a shock absorber as well as lubricant in the joints, is similar to hyaluronate. This medication usually provides the patients with 6 months of relief.

On the other hand, Hyalgan injection contains hyaluronic acid which is also used in the treatment of osteoarthritis. But, the primary difference between the two is that Hyalgan injection contains egg products, whereas Euflexxa doesn't. But self administration of these injections are not recommended.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello,

Euflexxa and Hyalgan injections are used as the following:
1) They are used as viscosupplementation or lubricating the joints
2) They help in reducing friction in the joint as they contain hyaluronic acid which is a natural joint lubricant
3) It helps in reducing the pain and inflammation of osteoarthritis
4)It helps to procrastinate joint replacement

The main difference between Hyalgan and Euflexxa is that Hyalgan contains egg products and Euflexxa doesn't have any egg products. If you are allergic to egg, you may refrain from taking Hyalgan. These are to be injected once in every 6 months or more.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
