Since the winter months began, i have noticed packed blood in my nose and today i had a little bit if bleed more than usual. Blood is hard and I notice it only appear in the morning after I awake. What is the cause and should I see my doctor? I am 74 years old . Can this be because the air is dry in my house? H. Sheppard.

Hi. Hard blood in the nose is indicative of slow bleeding allowing the clot to form. With your age of 74 , i would be worried about your blood pressure, which may be high. As the age advances the support of blood vessels gets thinned out so that even a trivial trauma can cause nose-bleed. In winter there can be incrustations forming in the nose causing bleeding on separation. Please consult your ENT Specialist to undergo nasal endoscopy to find out the origin of bleeding and may help you to get a proper diagnosis and treatment..
