Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my child has a chronic wet cough - runny/stuffy nose - and general lethargy - i first saw a doctor about it October 2013 - they said let it clear up without treatment - I saw the doctor again January 2014 - cough had faded since October but had never gone away completely - by January it was back worse than before - we were prescribed anti-biotics of which she took two courses of seven days - it has made no difference. She eats well and sleeps well - although her night breathing is noisey and she coughs through the night. i want to see a specialist - does this sound reasonable - there has been no diagnosis proposed by the GP. My daughter is six years old. thanks Julie
The symptoms as mentioned in your post suggest that your child might be having Allergic tracheo-bronchitis. Examination of the throat using a laryngoscope and X ray of the chest will be helpful in clinching the diagnosis.
Management includes: 1.Antihistamine preparations like Allegra & Cough expectorant syrup for symptomatic relief. 2. Montelukast preparations- used as a maintenance therapy. 3. A course of antibiotics may be taken to prevent secondary bacterial attack. 4. Maintain adequate hydration & healthy balance diet. 5. Steam inhalation. 6. Also make sure that she is well protected from cold, dust & other allergens.
Wishing her a good health. Take care.
