The possible causes may be
Age-arthritic changas
History of trauma to the joint in past years
Diabetic (if u r a diabetic)
Evaluation of muscles and range of motion has to be done for assessment.

Physiotherapy management involves
For pain-modalities(
ultrasound. ), helps to relax muscles and ligament and thus reduces pain.as it the condition is chronic it may take more than a week to 2 weeks for maximum recovery, but can feel the comfort from day 1.
Range of motion, ,stretching and strengthening exercises will be educated by your physical therapist for prevention and strengthening purpose.
