What Is The Remedy For Severe Cough With Gaging?

Hello, I started with bronchitis and now I have a problem, I believe it's post nasal drip. I am fine all day, but as soon as I lay down, about 5 mins. I start coughing, and it is a severe cough with gaging and all I seem to get up is a clear mucous. Could this be what I think as post nasal drip? Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

The symptoms as mentioned in your post suggest that you might be having Allergic tracheo-bronchitis.
Aggravation of symptoms on lying down can be attributed to throat irritation secondary to post nasal drip.
Examination of the throat using a laryngoscope and X ray of the chest will be helpful in clinching the diagnosis.

Management includes:
1.Antihistamine preparations like Allegra & Cough expectorant syrup for symptomatic relief.
2. Montelukast preparations- used as a maintenance therapy.
3. A course of antibiotics may be taken to prevent secondary bacterial attack.
4. Maintain adequate hydration & healthy balance diet.
5. Steam inhalation.
6. Also make sure that you are well protected from cold, dust & other allergens.

So, it will be better to consult an ENT specialist for proper clinical examination & start treatment as advised.
Wishing you a good health.
Take care.
