What is the risk of a pregnancy at 48 yrs old? I'm a pathologist and I'm afraid of all the complications during pregnancy at my age but specially, of a pregnancy induced dilated cardiomyopathy :( . I'm considering IVF with egg donor and I'm looking for statistics of success rates and complications at that age range. What would be your advice?
Hello Thanks for writing to us. At 48, the chances of having complications like pregnancy induced hypertension and gestational diabetes , as well as cardiac complications, are quite high, almost double the risks present in the twenties. Regarding success rates of IVF, depending on the centre and expertise, success rates range from 15 - 30 %. If the donor is reasonably healthy, then there would be good oocytes. Implantation rates are reduced in the 40s, so you can safely assume a success rate of 15 - 20 %. Peripartum dilated cardiomyopathy is quite rare , and I would not worry about it , unless you have antecedent histories . All the best.
I think you are correct in realizing that the pregnancy, by virtue of age and medical history is a high risk pregnancy. Getting pregnant would require as precondition a readily available obstetrician to take care of the pregnancy. Coorperation shall be needed both on your part and that of your doctor. If you really need to get pregnant, you have to prepare both psychologically and in time to be compliant to medical advise. I suggest you discuss with an obstetrician.
Thanks and kind regards.
