Hi,I am Dr. Joan F. Tryzelaar (Cardiac Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am having mild mitral valve prolapse, mild MR & mild tricuspid regurgitation - is there something to worry about?Doctor has given me metoprolol for this. For how long i need to take this?Do i need to limit my fluid intake?i feel uneasy after taking medicine,is this the s/e of the drug?
In my practice i come across many patients who are unduly worried about Mild Mitral Valve prolapse.i often explain to my patients that it is purely echocardiographic entity and it should not be seriously taken.even mild tricuspid regurgitation is not significant.if you are having palpitation , chest pain and giddiness then only you should take metaprolol otherwise you may stop it.if you are having such symptoms and feel uneasy you may reduce dose of metoprolo in consultation with your doctor. There is no need to restrict fluid.wish u good health.
Metoprolol is correct drug in the condition but it does not fix the valve. It keeps the heart slow .You have to be checked if you have rheumatic heart disease. In that case you need to be on antibiotics to make sure it doesn't progress further.
