Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 40 and I started taking yasmin for acne. I ve taken so many antibiotics for it that I m now allergic to minocycline. In less than 3 weeks, Yas cleared my face up completely! However, I had the worst depression I have ever experienced during this short period. I felt sad, could not get out of bed in the mornings, very moody, brain fog and overall lacking the ability to concentrate. I stopped for a month and my skin has been the worst it s ever been in my life! Tried spironolactone and that aggravated things even more so. I want to go back to Yas but fear depression and its impact on my job and mental health. Will I eventually get over the associated depression if I try for a longer period? Thanks much.
Hello, I can understand your confusion and stress. Yasmin is drospirenone - ethinyl estradiol, which is a hormone. It can cause nervousness. In some of females it can cause depressive symptoms. If it already happened to you once, it is going to happen again if you take yasmin again as your body will respond in same manner. There are two options. One is ask your dermatologist for any other option for your skin treatment. Second is the ask your dermatologist to talk to psychiatrist know to him/her. You can be given simultaneous treatment to prevent depression with yasmin. if both doctor coordinate it can be feasible.
Hope I have answered your query, regards, Dr.Chintan Solanki.
