What Is The Treatment For Umbilical Hernia During Pregnancy?

Hi, I'm 29 weeks pregnant and have a hernia under my belly button. Recently when my belly button pops out I can feel something coming through the hole and I keep pushing my insides back through! Should I go and get it sorted or am I worrying over nothing? what makes it worse is that I have a really bad cough at the moment so my belly is really getting alot of grief from the stretching of my muscles when I cough. What part of my insides could be coming out the hernia? hope you can give me some advice! thanks lisa

Hi Lisa,

It seems like you have an umbilical hernia. It is common to have an umbilical hernia in pregnancy and yes any intra-abdominal stress like cough will make it worse. The contents of this is usually a structure called omentum and rarely intestines.
Since you are just 29 weeks ,you need to know that it will increase in size as pregnancy advances. You need not worry at present and can consult a general surgeon after delivery to sort it out for you.
If it is large in size you could go for hernia repair atleast 6 months after delivery .As usually these hernia's may subside after delivery on their own.
Hope this helps .
Regards
