Hello, I m a nursing student. Recently a patient with atrial fibrillation in hospital experienced a mild TIA after He had been taken off blood thinners for 3 days in order to have a colonoscopy procedure. What is the usual course of anticoagulant treatment for people AFTER they have had a stroke?

Neurologist 's  Response
Good morning. I'm Dr. Saghafi and a neurologist in the Cleveland, OH region of the world. Don't know if that's anywhere close to you but greetings across the miles!

So in order to effectively understand your question and give you the best answer I need to know whether or not the patient had a TIA after he'd taken off his blood thinners or was it decided that he'd actually suffered a STROKE and had a measurable neurological deficit which persisted? In one case it is likely that anticoagulation would continue while in the other it would be preferable to keep anticoagulation off until such time as the patient's brain consolidated from the stroke so as to reduce the risk of hemorrhagic conversion. If you'd like to specifically get back to me with any more questions or to clarify this case further please look me up by name (DARIUSH SAGHAFI, MD) or at the following URL: http://doctor.healthcaremagic.com/doctors/dr-dariush-saghafi/68474.

Your STAR RATING of this response would be greatly appreciated if you found the information useful. Cheers!
