What Leads To Psychotic Episodes After Withdrawal From Gabapentin And Vanlafaxine?

I was prescribed soma, gabapentin, venlafaxine, Percocet and amitriptyline for years (5 years at least) and stopped them all at once. I went into a psychotic episode and was in the hospital 13 times over the next three months. The hospitals kept treating me as if I was an alcoholic however my dug and tox screens were always zero. I m trying to reconstruct my life and my working hypothesis is that it was the lack of drugs that made me psychotic, can you give me your opinion?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Sudden withdrawal of any medicines / drugs taken for a long period of time will cause withdrawal symptoms. It cause severe physical and psychotic symptoms due to the changes of the drug effects in the blood stream and brain that causes numbing or aggression. Depressant drugs or medications (e.g. alcohol, opiates, sedatives) tends to cause stimulated symptoms during the period of withdrawal.

Person who has been abusing stimulant drugs will experience depression of physiological functions once the drug is stopped, and withdrawal begins. Withdrawal symptoms need to be monitored cautiously in medical detox centers for safety & better recovery of the patient. Its good to know you are better now. Stay away from addictions. Lead a healthy lifestyle. Stay with positive people, avoid anxiety or stress.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
