Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Precautions Should Be Taken While Suffering From A UTI?
My wife and I , age 68/68, have sex once a week and she has had a UTI three weeks in a row. We are both disease free and very clean and healthy. I have read online that younger and older (>65) have about the same sensitivity to E.coli infections and clear rates with smx/tmp Rx. She dislikes taking medicine. Is the sex the problem, or could it be something else? Should we use a condom until she is free of the UTI? We don't want to give up lovemaking, but we don't want her taking antibiotics every week. Your input is welcome.

General & Family Physician, Dr. nandajay's Response
Hello,
This is probably related to her menopausal status. As dry vagina can get traumatized and has low protection barrier to common vaginal organisms. Thus she needs to have a gynae check and evaluated for hormonal replacement therapy.
Usually, the docs will treat the males with Flagyl drug {Metronidazole three times a day for 5 days} without testing as this is very common. Lastly, rule out diabetes.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello, This is probably related to her menopausal status. As dry vagina can get traumatized and has low protection barrier to common vaginal organisms. Thus she needs to have a gynae check and evaluated for hormonal replacement therapy. This presents as the urge to pass urine frequently, vaginal itching and vaginal discharge. Also, you need to get your urine culture and prostatic fluid examined for Trichomonas vaginalis and treated. Usually, the docs will treat the males with Flagyl drug {Metronidazole three times a day for 5 days} without testing as this is very common. Lastly, rule out diabetes.
