Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Should Be The Normal Level Of Total Cholesterol?
I'm a 17 year old female. My pediatrician just called about my lab results. My Total cholesterol is 217 but my LDL is 94 and my HDL is 104. My pediatrician said i need to change my diet but my rheumatologist said that my levels are normal and not to worry. I'm a bit confused. Should I be concerned about lowering my total cholesterol even though my HDL is so high and my LDL is low?
Since you are at a growing stage, you need not restrict fat in your diet. Adolescence is a critical growth period which requires sufficient energy, protein alongwith vitamins and minerals in your diet. You must ensure that you eat a healthy well-balanced diet and avoid junk and fried foods. Have lots of fruits and vegetables in the form of raw salads, milk and milk products like curd/yogurt, cheese etc. Eat healthy and stay active. That's all you need to do at this stage. Do not take stress and you don't need to worry much about cholesterol except that you must follow a healthy lifestyle which will be beneficial in the long run.
