Dear Doctor, My mother (87 years old/Kgs.83/5ft 2in.) has been advised to have a one off injection of Clexane 0,8ml before a 10 hour flight to protect her from DVT. She has a history of vein thombosis in her lower left leg. She currently takes food supplements such as Ginkgo Biloba, Turmeric, Vitamin E & Phosphatidylserine complex to help her with her memory problems. I understand that these supplements are natural blood thinners and as such should not be taken together with Clexane. I have two questions: (a) how many days(hours) prior to her Clexane injection should I stop her taking these supplements? (b) Alternatively, would these supplements have a sufficient blood thinning effect on their own, without her needing to have a Clexane injection before her flight? In other words, if she were to have a INR blood test, what result would be required for her to be safe from DVT without having to have a Clexane injection? Thank you very much for your advice.
