Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Type Of Serious Illness Cause If Cough Last More Than A Week
Hello I had very bad cough for the whole week and I decided to take mucinex 1200mg, it helps to loosen mucus. I have been taken it once a day for 3 days already. And for the past 2 days I am having very bad rash, on my face, back, shoulders, legs and my hands were swollen this morning. So I read what it says on the pack: stop using and ask doctor if cough lasts more than 7 days, comes back, or occurs with fever, rash or headache. This could be signs of a serious illness. after this I don t know how to react on this. What serious illness can it be?
Is there any fever? Any itching? If no fever and the rash is itchy, this might suggest an allergic reaction to the drug. As there is associated edema also, the allergic reaction is significant and might progress further. In such cases we need to give an antihistamine and sometimes steroids too. Kindly consult your doctor without delay to avoid further progression. Cough persisting beyond 1 week usually suggests a respiratory infection and will respond to antibiotics. Your doctor can guide in this also.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
