Wheezing In Ear, Diagnosed It Is Due To Elavil And Told To Tamper. Can I Stop Taking Pill?

I have had a great onset of ringing in my left ear over the last month. I have been to an ENT and she states it is from the elavil and to gradually tamper off of it. She was notifying my family doctor. I have not heard from my PCP yet and would like to start taking myself of it. I am on a 10 mg and take it one time before bed. Can I cut the pill in half?? and how long should I do this for safely.

Welcome to HCM

Well Elavil is an antodepressent medication and one of its side effect it Tinnitus (ringing in ear). but stoping it immediatly will mess with your head (called withdrwal symptoms)

Normaly to taper off thsi drug researchers recommend 10% reduction in drug per month but as you are having side effect which is realy an irritating one and quite mess with your life. so you will reduce 25% drug per 2 Weeks . it means

3/4 tablet for 2 weeks
1/2 tablet for 2 weeks
1/4 tablet for 2 weeks

This is recommended tapering off formula for you. after tapeing it off you can start some other antidepressant which does not mess with you ear.. Hope this is what you were looking for.
