When Cycling Heart Races Very Fast, No Chest Pain, Tightness. Feel Out Of Breath. Normal Or Problem?
Hi I have experienced on 3 occasions when in a cycling race a heart palpatations and according to my HR Monitor a heart rate of 230 beats per minute - 240 beats per minute, but only under extreme conditions like leading a race up a hill etc. For the rest of the time my heart rate has been normal for the type of riding that I was doing at the time. I am 43 years old and very fit with a maximum sustainable heart rate of around 177 beats per minute. During the coarse of a bike race I am generally under this but at the time when this happens, my HR goes from 180 straight to 230 beats or so and then goes up and down between these ranges? When this happens there is no chest pain or tightness and I am generally quite out of breath anyway at this point so I would say that this does not get any worse than it should be under these extreme conditions.

It is normal physiological condition to have heart rate going upto 250 during exercise. Since there is no problem at rest, you can ignore it. Exercising should be continued.
