When Will Be A Chickenpox Patient Be Clear From Being Contagious?

I am a mother of a five-month-old baby and have just contracted chicken pox. The first blister was noticed six days ago. Ever since then, I have self-quarantined and avoid contacts with the baby. I would like to know when will I be clear from being contagious?

Hello and welcome to HCM.
I have read your query and understood your concern.

Chicken pox is infectious from two days before the onset of the rash till all the blisters have crusted (usually 5-10 days after the onset of the rash).

Therefore in a few days, once all the blistering is replaced with crusts you can remove yourself from quarantine and get back to your baby.

However, since you were in contact with the baby before the onset of the rash, there is a possibility that your child may still get infected. Symptoms usually appear 7-14 days after exposure. Therefore, in case your baby develops a fever with rash, do consult a dermatologist for the necessary medications. There is no need to worry, as chicken pox in children is much milder in children than in adults.

In my opinion, I would also advice you to continue breast feeding after the scabbing, as this will transfer some protective antibodies into your child.

Hope this answer was helpful. Wish you a speedy recovery.
