When Will The Patient Gain Conscious Since Sedation Was Stopped Today Which Was Given For Brain Surgery For Aneurisms?
Hi, my mom had brain surgery last Monday for 4 aneurisms. They were clipped. However after she had a vasospam and some seizures. She was under propofol and under drugs for 6 days. Today they stopped the sedation. When will I see her waking up? Hopefully she does!
Hi, If she has been sedated for 6 days, it is likely that she will take 1-2 days to wake up. Propofol clears from the body fairly quickly but she may have been receiving other drugs such as pain-killers which will also affect her return of consciousness. Her kidney function will also determine how quickly she wakes up. If her kidney function is impaired it will be a little longer before she wakes up. I suggest you discuss with her doctors any concerns you have as they will be best informed to explain her progress. Regards, Dr K A Pottinger, MBChB FRCA
