Which Doctor Should I Consult For Knee Pain After Knee Surgery?

I had surgery on my knee last summer -- meniscus tears and fixing some bone delimitation. I have continued to have pain and have been treated with cortisone shots and then a series of three hyuralonic acid shots. The last shot was December 3. Unfortunately, I continue to have a lot of pain. I'm trying to find a physician to help me deal with the pain while I'm in Florida (I live in California and will be returning there in March). I want to figure out a way that I can deal with the pain--hopefully without big-time pain medication like vicodin. Should I see an orthopedist, a sports medicine physician, or some other type of specialist?

Hi Welcome to HCM - Glad to help you
For immediate pain relief I would suggest consulting an Orthopedic Surgeon. He can help you ease your pain with NSAID painkillers. Avoid taking any over the counter painkillers.

Please also take care to :
->Rest your knee as much as possible - avoid putting weight on it
-> To decrease the inflammation & pain you can use icepacks - do it for 20 mins every 4 hours until you get some relief.
-> Try to keep your knee on a pillow when you are sitting or lying down
-> Wear a knee brace so that your knee does not get injured again.
->You can try some stretching and strengthening exercises only if your doctor approves them.

I would also advice you to stay away from Vicodin unless your doctor prescribes it because its associated with serious side effects.

Hope this helps - Dr Sumit Mazumder
